The Vampires of Atlantis

The Vampires of Atlantis

by Zarin

nosferatushadow2The idea of people drinking blood as a spiritual ritual (although a very dark one) has been with us since the times of Atlantis. On the Lost Continent, a strange, very dark and secret cult arose centuries before Atlantis was destroyed in its great cataclysm.

A contingent within the upper society of Atlantis began to believe that the drinking of human blood and bathing in any form of blood would keep individuals, doing so, younger. This practice was also believed to give its followers stronger connections to the spirits of the dead. Go figure? Blood was believed to hold the spirit within the body and loss of blood would allow the spirit to be let loose and also its control over the body.  Any blood which touched another's body was believed to contain some part of any creature's spirit. And this blood containing part of that spirit could be absorbed into one's own blood. Along with that spirit's youth or vitality. Human sacrifice was considered to be the highest gift that could be given to any God or Goddess. And innocence and the perfection of beauty were the highest and purest possible forms of this gift. Menstrual blood was believed to be the release of evil spirits and was greatly feared and strictly avoided.

The idea of immortality becomes strongly entrenched among rich and pampered people in any society, who have much to live for. The ruling class of Atlantis was rapidly reaching boredom levels and the young of this class were constantly seeking new opportunities for entertainment and excitement. Extreme cruelty and selfishness was on the rise. If it hadn't been for the ancient prohibition against foreigners visiting Atlantis, this boredom would have made ancient Rome look tame in comparison. No foreigners were ever permitted to visit Atlantis or even know of its location. This was designed to prevent would be future invaders. Which was actually unnecessary, as there were forces within Atlantis more powerful than can be imagined. At least up until the final disaster.

This cult of blood drinking began among the young, wealthy, self absorbed, elite of Atlantis. Constantly worried about aging, they eagerly sought unguents, potions, fashions or anything else that they believed would keep them youthful looking. Does this sound strangely similar to our times as well? Nothing sells faster in modern civilization than something that makes you look and feel younger. Health, body care, exercise, cosmetics and youthful fashion are gigantic money making industries.

Sacrifice of humans and animals to the gods was now commonplace among Atlantean rituals. It was only a matter of time before the possibilities of immortality through blood ingestion was introduced.

A priest of the temple of El (the Sun God of Atlantis) had become very inebriated at a party gathering one evening and “spontaneously” decided to additionally drink the blood of his female companion. Which she, in a somewhat kinky mood, decided to oblige. The young lady took a knife, sliced her wrist and allowed a profuse amount of sanguine fluid to flow into the cup of the priest. Whether it was the blood or the liquor cannot be determined, but the next week made the priest not only feel younger, but also look younger. Was this a psychological effect?

Also at this particular feast, there was a young shaman-healer, His name was Muza. He was becoming somewhat known as a healer. Muza was very ambitious and intended to become famous and very affluent. He had developed an advanced form of hypnotism that could be projected without the recipient's knowledge. An early form of Assumption. He subliminally “convinced” this priest of El and his entire entourage that he had indeed gotten younger looking by the drinking of human blood. The idea of drinking blood had been hypnotically suggested to both this priest of El and his female conspirator.

Muza could use his voice in at an almost imperceptible level and would introduce hypnotic suggestion in this sub-audible way. Only his intended victims would receive it. Quite often they would never even remember it was done. Muza had also refined this ability to affect larger numbers at the same time.

Thus began one of the most disturbing trends of negative influence ever to be introduced into any civilization. This perfidious process directly contributed to and expedited the final catastrophe that struck Atlantis.

The rise of the Vampire Cult was swift and effusive. But was kept to a limited number. It had infected the highest levels of government. Muza had indeed become very powerful. The need for human blood soon became exorbitant, but had to be kept very secret. Even the most oppressed of peoples will revolt, if such a cult were discovered and its practices revealed. Human sacrifice on an individual public level to placate the gods is one thing, but the kidnapping and killing of children and family members to selfishly drink their blood is another. The rumors alone were highly toxic to the loyalty of the general populace.

This cult eventually spread to the ruling families throughout the Empire's colonies. The enslaved populations of these colonies were constantly in revolt over this vile practice. Children and young adults would suddenly disappear...never to be seen or heard from again. Girls and boys, who had just entered puberty, were the most desired. Innocence was considered to be a requisite for blood rejuvenation. Beauty was also preferred. Many parents would purposely scar their attractive children to prevent their abduction.

Even animals were not safe. Bulls, bears and especially lions (or any large cat) would be sacrificed to bathe in their blood. This practice evolved into a public contest between man and animal that became a common form of entertainment throughout the Empire. Great circular stages were built for this form of entertainment. The man, who was usually the victor (but not always), was allowed to cover himself in the blood of the perished animal as a sign of his victory.  He would be temporarily worshipped as a God for a limited period of time. Many amenities would be bestowed upon such victors.

A strange spiritual cult arose up from this practice. The worship of a special Bull with the mark of Atlantis (a triangle) on its' head became a very popular religion. This particular bull would be publicly sacrificed on a special day as a means of bringing good health, rain and abundance. It was soon discovered that the animal breed from which Bulls emerged could be raised in captivity and thus these animals became the normal basis of this form of entertainment. Only the strongest and most powerful bulls were used. This sport became so popular it even spread to many cultures. Even ones outside of Atlantean control and still exists to this day..

Once the bull had been killed and the victor covered with blood, a special container was used to capture the still remaining fluid. It was kept warm and liquid by a form of steam creation and then sold to those who wished to use it as well. It would often be drunk or used as an additive in a bath. Public knowledge of this practice was very common. Although most could not afford such luxury. It was only in whispers and rumors that “other” blood collecting practices were discussed and feared.

What is ironic about this vampire cult was that it did appear to make people look younger and live longer. Relatively speaking. This may have been a perfect example of belief supports reality. Or was it? Probably because the wealthy could afford to live and eat better than anyone else, they just lived longer than most others. And they did have the advantages of Aloe and many other skin restoratives. Most likely all of this was just an illusion brought on by desperation. People convincing themselves of what they “wanted” to believe. Unfortunately, this cult of Vampires did not die with the Fall of Atlantis. It is still with us, even today, and is evolving and changing according to the needs of modern culture. Vampires are one of the most popular forms of contemporary mass culture. The desire to live forever beats eternally in the human heart. No matter what the cost.
