mayancalendarThe Mayan Calendar

The whole idea concerning Dec 21, 2012 started with a revelation that the Mayan Calendar may possibly predict the end of the World on that specific date. To better understand this revelation, it is best to understand the Mayan Calendar. This calendar was created with a starting date after 3114 BCE for an approximately 5200 (actually 5125.36 years) year cycle ending on 12/21/ 2012. This cycle is based on an astronomical calendar that is actually more accurate than the current calendar we now use in the Western World.

The Mayan Calendar actually consists of three separate calendars.

1. A religious calendar consisting of 260 days ruled over by the influence of 20 Gods and Goddesses at 13 days each.

2. This religious calendar acts like a cog onto a second “solar” calendar consisting of a 360 day/12 month yearly cycle. One which also includes 5 mysterious “unlucky” non/days that do not belong to any month. A 6th non day is added periodically, as needed, to bring the calendar up to correction.

In the Aztec version (most likely very similar as it is derived from the Mayan Calendar), at the end of a 52 year cycle

called the “Katun;” all goods are destroyed and all fires have to be extinguished and then relighted. The number 13 is very propitious to Pre-Columbian peoples and 4X13=52. 100X52=5200. Also, 400X13=5200. Why the number 13 is so propitious, no one yet knows. It appears that the cycle of 13 is again repeated by 2000X13=26000. The exact number of years it takes our solar system to create an entire transit from the center of the Galaxy to its outermost orbit and then back again to the center. The Solar System then begins to move to the other/opposite half of the Galaxy. Much like a figure eight. This entire looping takes 52,000 years.

3. This 26,000 year movement across the face of the Galaxy is a third calendar called the “long count.” It is the outer cog of the great Calendar. This “long count” calendar tracks the movement of the sun through various positions (constellations?) in relation to the Galactic Center or “dark rift” (aka the Galactic navel). There are some variances in time due to gravity and other possible galactic masses acting upon the speed of the Sun's movement as it transits nearby. All the objects in the Galaxy are in motion. So there are never two identical gravitational effects. However, some of these gravitational disturbances may cause objects within our solar system to suddenly become unstable and get ejected into the inner solar system. These gravity effects may also be possibly triggering earthquakes and volcanoes as well.

Now it is obvious that the Mayan starting date of 3114 BCE is far short of 26,000 years, which suggests that actual experience of the Sun matching up with the center of the Galaxy was unknown by the Mayans, themselves. There had to be a much older culture that had experienced this transit at least twice to be sure it re-occurred. There is no civilization of any kind that existed 52,000 years ago...that we know of. Not even the possibility of Atlantis, which only existed a mere 13.000 years ago and our Sun would have been at the outermost point in the solar system's movement through the Galaxy. Which suggests that an even older culture, by at least a factor of 5, might have pre-dated Atlantis. Now we do know that the Super Volcano Toba, in Indonesia, erupted 70,000 years ago. This eruption wiped out tremendous amounts of life, leaving only around 3500 humans alive all over the world, from whom we are all descended. 3X26000=78000. Could there have been an astronomically aware civilization on Earth 78,000 years ago, that was completely destroyed by the Toba eruption? One whom we now have only a dim collective memory of? Only time and archeological discovery may tell.

The end date of the Mayan “long count” is 12 21 2012. which does not necessarily mean the end of the world or the end of life. What it does mean is that our sun and solar system will be lining up with the exact center of the Galaxy. Something not actually experienced in 26,000 years. Not even by the Atlanteans, the Egyptians, the Sumerians or the Chinese.

To the Maya, this meant the ending of their “fourth” world and the birth of a “fifth” world. Now if you do the math, it means over 78,000 years would have passed since the “first” world ended. Someone has recollected the passing of each of these worlds. And 26,000 years appears to be associated (by the Maya) with every world's longevity. Each ending could be a metaphor for some traumatic experience in the past but not necessarily associated with any 26,000 year cycle. We have no evidence either way. All these worlds could be merely explanations for major traumas held deep within the collective memories of our species.

As for this singular experience about to occur in our times, it looks like we will have to re-learn it on our own.
