The Rise and Fall of Atlantis: Empire

Chapter 5

By Zarin

Like Father Like Son

pyramidtroptriangle8Esa gave birth about 7 months after the mating ceremony. It was a very difficult time for the Queen. The first born of Malis was a male. He was given the name Maris. Which meant “beautiful.” He was both healthy and truly fit his name. At least physically.

Maris also looked much more Atlantean than did his father. The gene pool was getting purer. His hair color was lighter and his eyes were hazel colored. His skin was lighter as well. Many considered his features to be more that of Esa than Malis.

Unfortunately his nature was not received from his mother.

Esa was seriously ill for several weeks after the birth. No one could explain what was causing this malady. Mainly, because so many healers had died during the War of the Dolphins. So much medical experience had been lost. The Queen did eventually recover and this greatly loved woman had two more children. Two beautiful daughters, Princess Kola and Princess Ta-ti.

No one realized that it was the presence of Maris within Esa at the mating ceremony and the subsequent reaction of the Crystal Skulls, that was the cause for this unusual illness.

However, in both subsequent births, the same illness again set in. And it appeared to be getting worse with each birth. Esa never recovered after her third pregnancy. She was suffering a form of melancholy. The spectacular beauty of this woman became diminished as this “Goddess” started rapidly losing weight. She was becoming almost skeletal. Her cheeks had become sallow and her eyes had dark rings around them. Because of this, Malis lost sexual interest in her. The Great Headman even went out of his way to avoid her as much as he could reasonably get away with. Gossip began to spread throughout Atlantis as to “why the Queen was no longer being seen in public.” Distorted rumors of her having been inflicted with a strange affliction spread throughout the populace. Although constantly ill, Esa never showed any lack of love and affection to her children. Their presence always seemed to calm, comfort and relax her. Her babies being near her enabled her to appear temporarily normal. As long as she could be with them she seemed coherent. The servants would gossip about how, when the children were taken from her; she would suddenly scream out a horrific vision of them being murdered. When this happened and it occurred frequently, everyone would be instantly alarmed. Esa's screams were blood curdling and could reach great distances throughout the palace. Often disturbing important meetings being held by the Great Headman. Malis insisted that she be placed in quarters as far away as possible from his hearing. So a special set of apartments were built at some distance outside the main structure. They were spacious and comfortable. Equipped with every amenity. Completely surrounded by flowing water effects and beautiful gardens. Thick noise proof walls of some height entirely surrounded this area. Only one main entrance into this enclosed space existed and it was always guarded by two big warriors. It was essentially a prison. The Queen was never allowed to exit this area on her own. Rumors had begun to spread that Malis had even murdered her.

Malis professed that he still loved Esa, but definitely didn't want to be around her. Such was the depth of love the Great Headman actually had. Moreover, the lack of Esa's presence produced a very noticeable change in him as well. He had returned to his old self. Although some thought he had become even worse, if that was possible. The only things that now seemed to cheer the ruler of Atlantis were his children. Especially his son. Malis would spend whatever free time he had with the prince. Instructing him in important martial and political information. Knowledge Maris would not receive anywhere else. Malis was teaching his heir how to rule. The Great Headman made a principal purpose of teaching his son the Bakaran language and whatever Amalek had relayed to him about Bakaran culture.

Maris was always very attentive to these lessons from his father, but could actually have cared less about Bakara. The boy wanted to know everything about Atlantis.
